Fluid spread test

In a clinical setting, the ability of a dressing to absorb vertically and retain fluid minimising fluid spread is the key to reducing the risk of periwound maceration. The fluid spread test is designed to demonstrate the performance of four commercially available, high gelling fibre dressings when challenged with high fluid volumes.

The test clearly demonstrates the ability of ActivHeal® AquaFiber Extra to wick fluid away from the petri dish. Holding the fluid centrally, preventing the lateral spread of fluid to the edge of the dressing, thus reducing the risk of periwound maceration. No loss of shape is observed with AquaFiber® Extra.

Shrinkage test

The shrinkage test was developed to demonstrate the ability of ActivHeal® AquaFiber Extra to minimise shrinkage upon hydration, and at the same time maintaining its structural integrity when challenged with high fluid volumes.

During the test, minimal shrinkage is seen with ActivHeal® AquaFiber Extra. Absorbency capabilities are also clearly demonstrated with residual fluid remaining in all but the petri dish containing AquaFiber® Extra.

Should a dressing shrink excessively, part of the wound may become exposed presenting a potential risk to wound healing progression as well as the potential for more frequent dressing changes being required.

Tensile strength test

The tensile strength test is used to evaluate the mechanical strength of high gelling fibre dressings when hydrated with saline solution. The test intends to replicate the ability for a dressing to retain integral during dressing changes within a clinical setting.

A tensometer machine is used to measure the force required to pull the dressing apart when wet. The aim of this test is to demonstrate the ability of ActivHeal® AquaFiber Extra to remain integral on removal from the wound.

The central part of the test samples were saturated before being secured to the tensometer. ActivHeal® AquaFiber Extra was demonstrated to have a higher peak strength than the other similar dressings.
